Frequently Asked Questions

We have been breeding great danes for 5 years now. We average approximately a litter a year, however this year we may breed several of our females. We do not breed dogs for a living. I am a veterinarian, and my husband is a marketing analyst. We breed our pet danes as a hobby and hope that most of them go to pet homes. We do have show quality puppies, and will offer show marked puppies to qualified homes. Merles, whites, and mis-marked mantles will all be offered on limited registration to pet homes. We do not breed our females until they are at least 2 years old, and males when they are at least one year old. All of our breeding males and females have preliminary radiographs performed to evaluate their hips, and OFA hip certification sent away for anyone over 2. We do not have a kennel, and do not sell puppies to pet shops or high volume breeding facilities. All of our dogs are housetrained and are able to spend quality time as family pets. We do not breed dogs with behavioral problems, or with medical problems. Our adult dogs are fed high quality foods and are kept on heartworm prevention (Heart guard or Sentinel), and treated with Frontline monthly. Our puppies are whelped inside of our house, and have daily interaction with our entire family, including children, cats, and other dogs. We do offer a health guarantee. All of our puppies are sold on a contract stating that if you ever must find a new home for your dane, it must be returned to us at your expense. This is to prevent any puppies from ever ending up in an animal shelter or in the hands of an irresponsible person. Before you consider us for a dane puppy, please make sure that you are certain you are able to provide a forever home. Our puppies are bred for temperment, health, and quality. They will be socialized from birth and handled daily. All puppies will be vaccinated, dewormed, and examined by a veterinarian. We update pictures of the puppies on our website weekly and are free to answer questions about puppies on a daily basis. Our puppies are sent home with a CD of pictures taken of them from birth, as well as photos of their parents, and littermates. They also will go home with AKC registration papers, health certificates, a 5 generation pedigree with pictures, and a blanket with the scent from their mother and littermates. We hope that the sale of our puppies will not be the end of a transaction, but will be the beggining of a new friendship. We offer lifetime breeder support and hope that all of our puppy owners stay in contact. Please feel free to contact me at shafferdanes@yahoo.com or call 334-707-1391. We invite anyone wanting a puppy to stop by and visit us and the parents of the puppies.
